While we chose to replace the front suspension, if you are restoring a C1 be sure to remove the crossmember and check this spacer, chances are it needs replacing. Years of electrolysis between the steel and aluminum had turned it to dust. This turned out to be the remains of an aluminum spacer the factory used between the crossmember and the framerails. After rolling the front suspension out from under the frame we couldn’t help but notice a white powdery material stuck partly to the frame and partly to the crossmember. Fifty-five years of weather will do that to bolts. Unbolting the stock suspension really involved snapping off 10 out of the 16 bolts that hold the front crossmember in place. Working on a bare frame made this all very simple, but it can also be done with the body and engine in place. NOTE: An aluminum spacer may be needed between crossmember plate and transmission adapter housing to adjust the height of your transmission and transfer case assembly. Remove crossmember assembly, final weld everything and paint. If completely satisfied with positioning, tack gussets to tubing and plate. Next, we set the frame on jackstands to prepare for the removal of the front crossmember and suspension. in position along with crossmember plate. I know it sounds dumb to ask and I wouldn't if I didn't have to but I have been searching everywhere for pics and can't find any and everything I read says, "remove cross member or install cross member" and no explanation or pics.First, we removed the steering box and disconnected our heavily modified pitman arm from the front suspension. For example, do you use nuts and bolts to do it? Nuts on top? Which side do the oval holes need to be? Passenger or drivers?Īlso, how does this thing bolt up to the sub-frame? I assume it is laid on top and then bolted on but I am trying to figure out how it is done. Looking at the crossmember it has round holes on one side and oval on the other. I have the motor on the mounts and loosely tightened but I need to figure this out.

I am trying to figure out how the heck that goes back in.

I do have two washers and bolts for the center mount but I am talking about the crossmember to frame bolt up.

I went back to my baggies and found I only have three bolts and for some reason 5 nuts in the bag for the crossmember mount. It has been a few years since I took out the transmission and motor.
